Story Between Documentation and Me

Story Between Documentation and Me Y.F, Maintenance Department, China Telecom
First Meet I started to maintain Huawei transport equipment since March of 2005. Before that, I had no experience about equipment maintenance and had never taken any related training, which means I knew nothing about the models of Huawei transport equipment, board types, nor functions. I was eager to learn about the equipment systematically. However, there was no material about the equipment. All I had was a book called SDH Principles. Therefore, at the beginning, maintenance was nearly a mission impossible.
What Ive Learned from Documents Later, fortunately, my colleagues introduced the Huawei technical support website to me. I registered on the website and started to study by myself. The website provides equipment installation guides, usage manuals, configuration guides, and product introduction, which were very comprehensive and were exactly what I needed at the time. I learned the hardware structure, service bus allocation, and board functions of Metro 1000, Metro 2050, and Metro 3000. Though these are very simple for me now; back at that time, they were of great help.
Value of Documents In July of 2011, Huawei technical support website launched the activity of getting rewards for giving feedback on documents. Based on years of maintenance experience, I sent my feedback to ican@huawei.com and also in the feedback dialog box. Generally, I could get response from ican@huawei.com in one or two days. If a document needed to be modified, technical writers of the transport documentation department clearly indicated the date of update in e-mail. This showed how they valued the importance of documentation. I have been maintaining transport equipment for seven years. From my own experience, two biggest advantages of Huawei transport equipment documents are systematicness and practicability. With the fast development of modern communication technologies, new technologies and new equipment are emerging consistently, which is continuously challenging the operation and maintenance ability of maintenance personnel. Huawei transport documentation has built a convenient learning platform for maintenance personnel of telecom operators. The documents are timely updated and are very practical. What I want to mention especially is the Digital Microwave Communication Principle V1.1-20071229-C, which comprehensively introduced microwave, microwave product models, functions, and applications. This document is very valuable and useful for us.
In the future, I will keep paying attention to the construction and development of transport documentation, and keep giving suggestions and feedback. At last, wish a better tomorrow for Huawei transport documentation! |

First Meet I joined to Huawei for first time in February of 2006, at that moment, it was my first job after got my bachelor title. In 2007, I left Huawei and three years later had a new chance to join it once again. For that year, the information and technical support had a new face and more friendly page and documents. HedEx, contact with the author and those tools developed recently had improved a lot our experience and facilitated to solve our doubts and As a anecdote, when we have the challenge to built the first Optical ASON for Claro Chile, the first question from our customer was, Have someone of you attended a training about it?; our answer was, notbody. Fourtanetly, we found a good ASON deployment and commissioning guide as the key document to face and it was succesfully committed. The documents have a big value, just we need to know where we can looking for and keep a good habit to be continuosly reading them and get new knowledge. |
