Cannot get AT+CNMI to enable +CMTI notifications

Hi,
I'm currently writing an SMS sending and receiving application for a Huawei
Model: E176
Revision: 11.104.14.01.55
(a T-Mobile web'n'walk Stick IV actually).
I cannot get the modem to issue +CMTI messages on SMS reception.
Tried:
AT+CNMI=1,3,0,0,0
and
AT+CNMI=1,1,0,0,0
combined with all other settings I could think of but to no avail. The +CNMI command returns OK but the modem still does not send +CMTI messages when it receives an SMS.
What magic spell is needed to make the GSM modem return the unsolicited +CMTI result codes or does this simply not work?
