Release and update of the IP address on a PC

If a user wants to update its IP address, release the old IP address on the PC (DHCP client). The IP address does not need to be released when the lease is updated.
1. (Optional) Release an IP address.
The commands for releasing an IP address vary with the operating system.
a. Run the ipconfig/release command on a PC running Windows 7 to release the IP address.
b. Run the winipcfg/release command in the Windows 98 MS-DOS environment to release the IP address.
2. Update an IP address.
The commands for updating the lease of an IP address vary with the operating system.
a. Run the ipconfig/renew command on a PC running Windows 7 to update the IP address lease or request a new IP address.
b. Run the winipcfg/renew command in the Windows 98 MS-DOS environment to update the IP address lease or request a new IP address.
